Mario Schifano: Campo di grano

Mario Schifano (Homs, 20 settembre 1934 – Roma, 26 gennaio 1998) è stato un artista, pittore e regista italiano. Insieme a Franco Angeli e Tano Festa rappresentò un punto fondamentale della Pop Art italiana ed europea. Perfettamente inserito nel panorama culturale internazionale degli anni sessanta, era reputato un artista prolifico, esuberante ed amante della mondanità. L’abitudine alle droghe che durò per tutta la sua vita, gli valse l’etichetta di artista maledetto.

Mario Schifano nacque nella Libia italiana dove il padre, impiegato del ministero della Pubblica Istruzione, era stato trasferito. Dopo la fine della guerra tornò a Roma dove, a causa della sua personalità irrequieta, lasciò presto la scuola, lavorando in un primo momento come commesso, per poi seguire le orme del padre che lavorava al museo etrusco di Villa Giulia come archeologo e restauratore. Fu proprio grazie a questa esperienza che Schifano si avvicinò all’arte eseguendo, in un primo periodo, opere che risentivano dell’influenza dell’Arte informale. La sua prima personale fu alla Galleria Appia Antica di Roma nel 1959.

Mario Schifano (Homs, 20 September 1934 – Rome, 26 January 1998) was an Italian artist, painter and director. Together with Franco Angeli and Tano Festa it represented a fundamental point of Italian and European Pop Art. Perfectly inserted into the international cultural scene of the sixties, he was considered a prolific, exuberant and lover of worldliness. The habit of drugs that lasted throughout his life earned him the label of a cursed artist.

Mario Schifano was born in Italian Libya where his father, an employee of the Ministry of Education, had been transferred. After the end of the war he returned to Rome where, because of his restless personality, he soon left school, working initially as a clerk, and then following in the footsteps of his father who worked at the Etruscan museum of Villa Giulia as an archaeologist and restorer. It was thanks to this experience that Schifano approached art by performing, in a first period, works that were influenced by the influence of informal art. His first solo exhibition was at the Appia Antica Gallery in Rome in 1959.
